Nice work this week Beauty Brainiacs! 55% of you figured were able to separate the BS from the Beauty Science. Here are the answers.
1. Hair can expose eating disorders.
TRUE. Scientists at Brigham Young University were able to diagnose eating disorders by looking at the carbon and nitrogen ratio in hair. Since hair grows all the time (about 1 mm a day) it becomes a chemical diary of a person’s day-to-day nutrition.
2. Tea drinking can speed hair growth.
FALSE. It’s actually the opposite. Tea drinking can reduce hair growth and can actually be a treatment for hirsutism. Researchers from Suleyman Demirel University, Isparta, Turkey found that women who drank 2 cups of spearmint tea for 5 days had reduced levels of androgen which helped reduce hair growth.
3. Oil spills can be cleaned with hair.
TRUE. A hairdresser from Madison, AL discovered that hair stuffed in pantyhose creates a sponge for oil. He shared his findings with NASA and they’ve begun a research program to see if it can be made into a real-life solution.
4. Geckos use hair to stick to surfaces.
TRUE. Geckos actually stick to surfaces due to ultra-fine thin hairs on the bottom of their feet. The sticking force comes from a phenomena known as Van Der Waals force. It’s a weak force but when the millions of tiny hairs work together they create enough adhesion to hold the lizard. It’s actually so strong the gecko can hang by 1 toe.
