New York Spring ’08: Vena Cava

September 8th, 2007

Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai, nominated for this year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award, will present the Spring ’08 Vena Cava collection at the Swiss Institute, 495 Broadway in New York on Wednesday, September 5th from 5-6pm.

What’s the inspiration for your Spring ‘08 collection?
Italian industrial designer Achille Castiglioni, Kenneth Anger and his infamous Hollywood Babylon books about ’30s Hollywood stars, and ’70s print design.

What’s new for you this season?
We’re doing a small group of lingerie this season - slips, camisoles, bras and tap pants to be worn on their own or layered under our dresses.

Did you do any traveling this summer? Where to?
The “golden triangle” in India: New Delhi, Jaipur and Udaipur. And to Agra to swing by the Taj Mahal.

Has the shift in the dates of this season’s fashion week affected you at all?
Not so much - a few more sleepless nights to finish it all faster, that’s about it.

This is the last season for shows in Bryant Park. Where in New York would you move the tents?
Well, if it were up to us, we’d move the tents out to Gowanus, Brooklyn, across the street from our studio, for convenience’s sake.

If you were a street style photographer, describe something that would catch your eye if you saw them wearing it.
Naked people on the street usually catch my eye.

Any special ritual or routine that is helping you gear up for your show?
We cook a big dinner for all of our interns a little bit before the fashion week - and have them all over to one of our houses. It’s really refreshing to hang out with everyone and not talk about zippers and trims.

iPhone or Blackberry?
The free Samsung phone from 1997.

And finally, how will you spend Labor Day weekend?
Sewing, jewelry making, fitting, casting, styling…
