Wow - this is my third night in Tokyo - I still can’t believe I’m in the city where retail fashion is still buzzing, despite the economic recession in the country. Honestly, if you see what I saw in the last two days, you won’t believe that Japan is in recession!

It’s interesting to see people shopping and buying when the leader of the country announced that the country is officially experiencing a recession. We spent a full day in harajuku ( the trendy district of Tokyo) and was amazed when we saw the crowd. I believe it’s not the foreigners who go shopping in this busy area but the local teenagers, they love shopping here in Harajuku. We even had problems squeezing through the crowd!

I love traveling in winter. It’s nice to put on those jackets I had bought for years! Being clad in dark colored tights and matching wool scarves become a trendy and stylish affair. Besides, clothes layering can be fun and creative.

Besides checking out on the facilities of each hotel accommodation in our travel destination, I’m checking if there are heaters in the room and heated blanket in some of the hotels. At this point, it doesn’t matter if the bathroom comes with tankless water heater but I do like to have a bathtub for those wintry days… it is nice and relaxing to soak in the hot water during the cold.

There is a new growing trend among the new age executives and yuppies in the fashion world. Body accessorizing is becoming popular with more fashion conscious individuals making a statement with a nose ring, a belly ring and even cartilage ear piercing!

For me, body piercing or body jewelry is common since I used to teach in a design school with the most funky and fashionable teens. When done tastefully, a belly button ring or a nose ring can be an identity enhancement but when it’s gone overboard, it can turn people off. Fashion and style can be quite a personal thing. Ever tried shopping with a friend to realize that your taste and opinions don’t match? In other words, not every good friend is a good shopping companion cos tastes differ!

I tend to shop alone except on certain occasions. Getting the opinion of a friend is helpful at times but sometimes, I much prefer to make my own decisions and take my time to do my shopping picks. Jewelry, shoes or bags, I like a unique touch to the designs and sometimes my friends can find my taste a little too artistic and liberated. These days, medical id tags have been worn as jewelry so it will be interesting if jewelry designers can catch on the trend and apply their creativity onto the design of these medical tags. And who knows, perhaps a medical tag can as attractive and creative like this paisley necklace, combined with lovely tiny faceted peridot rondelles. Simple and stylish, it can be a good balance between form and function.

It seems to me that surfing with a laptop computer in Starbucks or a local cafe has become a lifestyle than a necessity.
