Fashion for all

Fashion for all

Paris fashion week: eight days, 90 shows, a cast of thousands, a budget of millions. And how many trends? Er, none, actually. Nada, zero, zilch. At a push, you could count florals as a trend, but predicting that people may wear floral prints in summer is a bit like forecasting that they will wear sunglasses or eat ice cream. When something happens every summer, it’s not a trend.Trends have become the comfort food of style, the clothes on which we mindlessly retail-snack. They govern how we dress, whether we like it or not. With catwalk interpretations in every store, and the high street bringing us a new look every three to six weeks (that’s our attention span for a new look these days, apparently) what we buy is almost inevitably trend-led. So the mood in Paris last week was uncertain and a little bewildered. Six months ago, designers marched us smartly into gothic black, body-con and power dressing. Now they are beating a semi-retreat back into romance and prettiness, and we are left wrong-footed. To add to the unease, while there is no one mood, no single direction to be gleaned from Paris this season, this does not mean that all outfits are to be deemed equal. Far from it. There will still be a fashion in-crowd - it’s just that this season, you can’t hope to join the club simply by buying the key piece, the puffball skirt or mustard-coloured jumper. The look of the moment is as exclusive as ever: it’s just going to be harder than ever to pin down.

Paris Fashion Week: Round up review

Paris Fashion Week: Round up review

While Milan had romance, Paris said it with flowers. The floral dance began at Balenciaga, where Nicolas Ghesquière delivered an electrifying collection in peony, rose, gladioli, violet and gardenia prints from the archives, digitally enhanced for supranormal shape and colour possible only in computer-land.

In sumptuous fabrics, such as silk faille and radzimir, his sculpted short dresses and micro-suits over shorts appeared as dazzling as sunlight on stained glass.

Monster Fashion in Paris

Monster Fashion in Paris

British designer John Galliano and Belgian designer Martin Margiela are as different in style and personality as tweed and taffeta. Galliano is a flamboyant fashion plate himself, soaking up the footlights on his runways by appearing at the end of each show in a different get-up (yesterday he was the quintessential Englishman in his tails and boxers). Margiela, on the other hand, shuns any kind of personal attention, refusing to be photographed for the press and never showing his face at the end of his shows. (A quick front row poll at his show yesterday revealed that several journalists who had been covering the designer for at least a decade had no idea what he looked like).

Fashion protest over terror plans

British designer Vivienne Westwood used her Paris fashion show as a platform to protest against Britain’s moves to increase the number of days terrorist suspects can be held without charge.

She sent models down the catwalk wrapped in T-shirts and silk blankets printed with “56” – the maximum number of days the government reportedly wants to hold terror suspects, doubling the current limit.

Milan fashion bows out in mini blaze of red, white and blue

The curtain came down on Milan Fashion Week yesterday with a show by the cult Italian label, AB/SOUL.

Hinting that hemlines will be rising next spring, at the heart of the collection was a series of mini dresses in white cotton, red ruched chiffon and blue silk.

Dresses were accessorised with bow belts and oversized sunglasses, and teamed with sleeveless cardigans and tan wedge sandals.

dodostyle: a blend of Korean and Japanese fashion

dodostyle: a blend of Korean and Japanese fashion

This layered look among urban young girls and teenagers is catching up in cities like Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea and probably Malaysia. While they would make me look like someone who is pretending like a cute and carefree teenage girl, this style of dressing may be hot and trendy among the girls of urban cities. I’ve definitely outgrown this sort of hip and unconventional styles but can imagine how I’ll be crazy over them if these were available during my days.

Milan Fashion Week: Giorgio Gipsy

Milan Fashion Week: Giorgio Gipsy

All that was missing was the campfire as Armani unleashed the ‘Giorgio Gipsy’, his most provocative muse yet, at Milan Fashion Week yesterday (Monday).

Dripping in fringes, with a crystal sarong knotted around her breasts and a peasant-girl scarf knotted over her long hair, Armani’s nomadic traveller glided sensuously down the catwalk in jeweled sandals so delicate she was almost barefoot.
